Houston Center for Contemporary Craft announces its call for entry for “CraftTexas 2012”, the seventh in a series of juried exhibitions showcasing the best in Texas-made contemporary craft.

This unique show provides Texas artists the opportunity to be considered for inclusion in major national museum and private collections. The exhibition is open to artists currently residing in Texas who work in clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood and found/recycled materials. The exhibition also serves as a starting place for the general public to appreciate the depth and breadth of art being made in our own communities and across the state.

“CraftTexas 2012” will be juried by Jean W. McLaughlin, Executive Director of the Penland School of Crafts in Bakersville, NC; Rachelle Thiewes, internationally acclaimed metal and jewelry artist from El Paso, TX; and Jade Walker, Director of the Visual Arts Center and the Creative Research Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin.

The entry fee for “CraftTexas 2012” is $35, and applications must be must be completed and submitted online via the CaFÉTM system at www.callforentry.org by March 15.

The exhibition will be on view next year from Sept. 29 – Dec. 30, at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Three Award of Merit prizes of $1000 each will be awarded by the jurors at the opening reception.

Cedars Open Studios Nov. 19, 12 – 6 p.m. is your opportunity to learn about the neighborhood and the numerous professional artists and craftsmen residing in the Cedars. The artist studios are open year around by appointment, but once a year, they open on the same day, giving visitors a chance to really experience a creative, evolving neighborhood.

Come meet the artists, see where they work and what they create. Search and find the perfect piece to take home with you. If you’ve never been to the Cedars, now is a great chance to learn about the neighborhood.

This fall, the Nasher Sculpture Center presents Tony Cragg: Seeing Things, the first U.S. museum exhibition in nearly 20 years of the work of the award-winning, internationally-acclaimed artist. The exhibition will be on view at the Nasher Sculpture Center from September 10, 2011 to January 8, 2012. Tony Cragg: Seeing Things is presented by the Dallas Foundation.

Featuring approximately 30 large- and moderately-scaled sculptures dating from 1993 to the present, the exhibition provides a rare opportunity to see and better understand the artist’s work since his last U.S. museum exhibition in the United States in 1990-92.

“Tony Cragg is one of the leading sculptors of our time,” said Nasher Sculpture Center director, Jeremy Strick. “Through his work in a variety of media and surprising range of forms, he has consistently broadened and deepened our understanding of sculpture and its possibilities.”

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon following Thanksgiving, artists of the Chicken Farm Art Center welcome the public to their studios.  Regional and national artists are invited from all over to show their work as well. In addition to the work of resident artists, you will find a wide range of jewelry, pottery, painting, sculpture, rocks, mosaics, woodwork, hand-sewn and hand-crafted pieces. You are invited to drink some hot apple cider & have some cookies, get your face painted, play with clay or even raku your own pot. Music provided 10 am to 5 pm daily.

Announcing a call for entries to the 7th annual Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival, April 14 & 15, 2012.  This is a juried show of 200 national and regional artists who sell their original creations along a landscaped pathway beside the beautiful waterway in the Woodlands, Texas.  Proceeds from the festival benefit our local charity partners involved in bringing fine art experiences to the community, as well as providing scholarships to young aspiring artists.
